Where were you 10 years ago? - Ennen oli ennen, nyt on nyt

Ten years ago, when Princess Diana died, we were out on a trip somewhere in Belgium. I can't remember who was driving or even who were in the car, but at some point we drove through a small village and passed a Nato troups' area where flags were flying at half mast. There should have been some sort of fair that day but nothing much was going on, the mood was really somber. Who has died, we wondered - must be a Nato general at least to create this effect. We didn't stop and didn't hear about the accident before returning home in the evening.

And this is how her former home, the Kensington Palace looked like last Sunday. Went to London for the weekend and wanted to see how the tenth anniversary was affecting the place.

There were plenty of flowers, photos, newspaper cuts, toys and teddybears plus various other memorabilia attached to the railings. And it seemed to be a real place for venting one's feelings: there were photos of Camilla and Charles as well, and Camilla's eyes were gauged out. I really wonder what would have happened if she went to the remembrance service as originally planned.

The rest of the trip was mostly spent on the Tube, travelling from one (closed) yarn shop to another. I had a couple of new yarn shops on my 'to do' list - wanted to check those before the Knitting and Stitching show in October. I'm still kicking myself for not taking photos of Stash Yarns. Just take a look at that yarn list! (and please stop drooling)

The next stop was I knit London, then Loop and finally, on Sunday, All the fun of the fair. Quite a program, quite a challenge not to buy any (or should I be honest and say 'not too much') yarn. Did quite well. Will show you in the near future what I bought. And it's not much.

This trip didn't include any museum tours, neither any art exhibitions. This is the closest thing to a piece of art - it's the window of Selfridge's. A skirt with dozens and dozens of leather applications in different colours, all in the shape of a cross.
Details.

and the hemline
Almost like autumn leaves, isn't it?
And here's proof that even though I may have wanted to buy some yarn, it was made impossible. The note on the window says that they had a stand on the near-by fair on Regent Street, but I never found them. Oh well, there's always next time.
Didn't find the 'Yarn forward' magazine anywhere else, and this one was behind closed doors.
The shop is situated just off Carnaby street and there are lots of other small shops.
And Regent Street was packed full. Didn't get any closer this facade but it looked like the Finnish artist Anu Tuominen had been set free once again.

Berlin, part II

Right. I spent five fabulous days in Berlin and managed to have quite a successful mixture of different activities - spent some time alone discovering the city and its sights, participated in some activities of the group that was visiting Berlin as well as met some locals there. Actually, I'm still surprised it all went that well, since I'm such an introvert. It was so much fun and totally different from my normal week - even the minor problems I had passed rather smoothly. First of all, the first night at the hotel didn't seem too promising at first. I tried to open the number combination lock of my suitcase, but it just wouldn't open with the code I thought I'd used. So, I had to prepare myself to find another lucky number between 000 and 999, but actually the lock opened before I was even half way. The second night wasn't much better: when I was taking my contact lenses out, one of them just got stuck on my fingernail and a small part of it remained in my eye. Trust me, it wasn't easy to get it out but finally I managed - didn't even have to go to the hospital. And finally, when returning to Brussels on Sunday night, the train carriage where I was supposed to sleep, wasn't even included in the whole train. Despite the train manager's best efforts, it took quite a long time to find us all another place to sleep, and even though he did manage to do it, I was too wound-up to fall asleep straight away. The train was late when it reached Brussels, and even though we have shower facilities and cafeteria where I work, those comforts just couldn't replace a good night's sleep and so I spent the rest of the week just trying to recover from the lack of sleep. Anyway, it was such a fun trip, and that was the whole point.

Epätoivozuumaus.

We spent half a day on a river cruise, and these metal men were part of that naval sightseeing tour. I'd expected us to go and see the figures from a shorter distance, but no, we'd make a detour, so I had to be quick and try to zoom in on these giants.

Maailman pienin botski jokiristeilyllä. Ja lujaa meni!

..while some of the boats were just minuscule.

Halusin nähdä Marlene Dietrichin haudan - muu jengi paineli Sanssoucin linnaan.

As always is the case, you have to choose between several activities. While the others went to see the Sanssouci castle, I decided to go and look for Marlene Dietrich's grave. Found it!

Torilta bongattuja koruja.

When strolling through the city center, I found these pieces of ...well.. is it jewelry? Funnily enough, I'd thought that it's only Finns who would wind hemp or linen or other rough materials around their neck and call that decoration.

Lankashoppailua täytyi rajoittaa monestakin syystä, mm. siksi, että tätä enempää en olis saanut kulkemaan takaisinpäin. Nämä sentään mahtuivat reppuun.

I'd set myself a limit of yarn shopping. The limit wasn't 50 euros or some other amount of money - it was based on volume. I'd allow myself filling a small backbag but not more, and this amount would fit in. Yay!

This is just a bag I happened to see in a shop window. Can't see the price tag but I think it was rather close to 600 euros.

And let me end this posting by adding a few links to Berlin yarn shops. A couple of other knitters have listed their recommendations, so I just take advantage of those, adding the link here.

Another knitting blogger hits Berlin yarn shops - See especially the colourful wave of yarn in her blog - that was KaDeWe's sidekick
Verano kävi tsekkaamassa kaupungin kesäkuussa ja Jaanakin listasi Berliinin ja Hampurin harrastetarvikekauppoja jokin aika sitten.
