Variations on a theme

In one of Yahoo's knitting group I belong to, Knitting in Japan, Silvia threw us a challenge to try out a leaf pattern and see how we interpret the different knitting symbols. (By the way, check out her blog when you have some time. The posting on September 19 cracks me up every time, just look at her cat supervising her garden work.)

Anyway, it seems that I have some serious trouble following given instructions. While the pattern produces some small leaves, I wasn't too happy with the end result. So, I went the whole hog and knitted a 50-gram-ball of Bouton d'Or's "Mango" into a series of leaves. And a note to myself: never, ever start knitting cables with this yarn! It's 50 % cotton, 50 % modal and has no give whatsoever.

Knitting started quite innocently...

but as it progressed, I found several spots where I'd make some alterations. Just for fun, turned one of the leaves to point to the left. The consists of twisted stitches (RS: knit through back loop, WS: purl through back loop) but at some point I'd only do them on the right side and slip the stitch on the wrong side. That's when the stalk became more prominent.

On the left the leaves produced by following the original pattern (more or less), on the right my own test tube babies.

Things I altered in this pattern:
row 3: crossing stitches. Surprisingly, the chart calls for "normal" crossed stitches while on all the other rows, they're twisted. So, I would both cross them and knit/purl through back loop.
row 5: instead of increases, I moved the new stalk even more to the right. Crossed the stitches just like on row 3 but did that one stitch earlier on row 5. This produces two purl stitches between the ever-growing stalk and every new leaf instead of just one and separates the parts a bit better.
row 5/7 (depending on where you decide to make your increases): you're supposed to knit five stitches out of just one by knitting/purling. This produces rather big holes, so I'd increase one stitch from a previous row, then knit-purl-knit into one stitch and once again, pick up one stitch from a previous row.
row 9/11: in an attempt to create a really right-slanting leave, I'd place the decrease a bit differently. Of the five stitches of the leaf, I'd knit two and then knit the remaining three together.
row 11/13: same thing with this decrease: instead of a centered one, I'd knit three together again
row 12/14: instead of prolonging the tip of the leaf, I'd make the crossing of the stitches on this purl row, while in the original it's done on row 13. This means that there will still be a elongated tip on the leave but not as long as in the original.
row 13/15: if you followed my alterations, the leaf ends on these rows due to the increases which started a bit later.

The yarn wasn't too pleasant to knit - or let's just say that it didn't serve this purpose. It was difficult to find a pair of suitable needles. Since there was no flexibility, both the increases and crossed stiches weren't too easy to make. The mix of materials might prove comfortable to wear in the summer but more likely the few balls I have of this 'Mango' will turn into a bag... one day.

And talking about bags, here's my latest project which has helped me get in touch with my feelings. Yesterday, when trying to figure out how and which way the bag, the lining and the thingies meant for attaching the handles should all be facing, I both laughed and cried. It was so frustrating, but as you can see, it's solved now. (Mental note to self: bag's right side, lining's right side facing each other, the small patches between them, pointing down. And for Gawd's sake, woman, leave a hole so that you can get the handles out when turning the finished lining!) -- This is true recycling: found the deer on a flea marked. It was framed then, but I carefully checked that it wasn't glued or anything. Brought it home, took the frames apart, washed the work carefully (and what a neat work some unknown lady (?) has done; there where no loose ends on the backside). Then I'd measure this separate piece and calculate the amount of stitches needed to knit the sides, back and bottom and sew them together to form a bag. Finding a suitable lining wasn't too easy, but just last weekend I went to a crafts fair here in Belgium and discovered a whole new world of quilt fabrics. Bought two pieces of it, and the small hankie-sized bit hanging on the right is all I have left.

Altogether I bought 12 pieces of quilting fabrics, all of which are earmarked for various bag projects. One of them was just perfect for 'Pocahontas' (on the left), and once I've recovered the dents on my pride, I might try my hand with the sewing machine again. How hard can it be? Millions of women make bags all around the world - and if getting a bag lining right is the biggest challenge of my life...well... you get the point.

Anyway, there hasn't been much time to fiddle with bags or other projects lately. Work has been h*ll, our mini team is being restructured and working hours are getting out of hand. Then there's the small matter of practically each and every household gadget falling apart, including the lights on the ceiling. Every time I climb up and replace two of them, another pops somewhere else; I've even stopped putting the ladder away. Then there's the yearly inspection of the car (passed), plenty of bills to pay, finding a place to keep the barbeque grill over winter, so on and so forth. Well, enough of complaining - I'll get back to my handbag factory.

Oh, and sorry, I haven't updated the blog lately, hence I don't think I've thanked my Secret Pal for the lovely autumn card she sent. Thanks, I loved it! Went to an open-air crafts market earlier today and took some photos on my way home - will add them later. I just love time when trees are turning yellow and gold.

Tuumasta toiseen... eiku toimeen

Kuulun Knitting in Japan -nimiseen neulontaryhmään, jossa saa vertaistukea japanilaisten neulemallien tulkintaan.

Tää on paljon mielenkiintoisempaa.

Töissä on taas aika helvetillistä, minitiimi natisee liitoksissaan ja mä kävin taas pitkästä aikaa tutkimassa, oisko mitään mielenkiintoista muuta työtä tarjolla. No comments tässä vaiheessa.

Old news

Oh, where did a whole week go? I remember bits and pieces of it, but most of it just
disappeared without a trace. Have been working late, so the grocery stores are closed by the time I get home - with the exception of last Wednesday when I just left everything and went to our local knitting meeting here in Brussels. Lots of new faces there, the group is still growing. On a personal note, I want to say that on the way there I did go to a local yarn shop which is near-by and showed remarkable self control there; bought a pair of rosewood needles which came even in size 2.0 mm (for straight needles that's not common). Last weekend I visited Aachen, just to stack up some new patterns and knitting needles and buttons and clasps - and almost no yarn. I guess it's like methadone to Amy Winehouse: you desperately want the real thing but if you can't get it, any substitute will do. Can't buy yarn, so bring on all the other stuff. And as if to tease and torture me, there were sales of summer yarn: 1 euro per ball. Ok, 'fess up: bought three. That's three balls, not three kilos, you silly!

Otherwise it's been a week of progress but I won't show any photos until they're all finished. There's a new green bag in the house, based on moebius knitting, and the mellow baby yellow thingy I had with me in the meeting is turning into a bag as well. (Although the people who saw me knitting it during one lunch hour, might start a rumour that there she was, the crazy Finn, knitting something that looked like a baby garment. Yeah, for a sumo-size baby. One might also camouflage chicken in it.) One more Hyrna shawl made of Grignasco's merino silk has seen the daylight, Noro's Cashmere flavour is turning into colourful squares and Habu's silk and steel is turning into a fine mess. And the buttons I bought in Aachen last weekend have found an excellent hiding place. They were meant to be attached to a cardie I made earlier this year, but I just can't find the small paper bags they are in. Can't have left them in the shop? As a punishment, I'll stay at home until they're found. Actually, I really should be motivated by that decision, since on Sunday there's a hobby fair in Mechelen. If I can find the buttons by then, I get to buy something else - and if I don't, I should find some other red and black buttons there. So, even if it's carless Sunday, have to get to Mechelen :-)

Here's an update on the items that *have* been finished and weighed.

The handles of the 'Pocahontas' bag weren't too easy to attach. There were drilled holes in them, but even after sewing them on, they didn't look nice. I used all the yarn to make these felted leaves, and after attaching the handles, I just needle felted and sew the leaves on the top of the handles.

And here's the other felted bag finished.

While this moebius thingy has turned into a bag as well - it's just not been weighed yet and I'll only show it once it can be included in yarn consumption calculations.

9828 grams - 200 g (Pocahontas) - 198 g (for the other bag) + 150 g (three balls of yarn) = 9580 grams still to go.

I leave you with some more fashion photos. Plenty of knitted items on display in Aachen:

And finally, a new photo to add to my "mummy, I want one of these" series. It's been a while I've seen any horses in the cities I've visited, but this group was patrolling the streets of Aachen. Too bad that I was so slow with my camera; the group had passed by the time I'd set all the details.

Look what I got! - Aah mikä paketti!

Hooray! First SP11 surprise has arrived, and just look what I got! I even surprised myself by taking some photos before I tore the whole thing open. There was a variety of exotic teabags (great timing - I feel like having caught a cold, and would like to make some tea in my office, but didn't have any teabags here), and the sour green apple sweets set me drooling.

Jippii!

A-a-a-and there was a book inside! Modular knits made of Koigu yarns, unusual shapes and knitting directions - just what I like. Thank you very much Secret Pal, you really hit the bull's eye with this one.

Ta-daa! Sielläpä oli tämmöinen kirja, jossa on vähän erikoisempia malleja tehtynä Koigun langoista. Hii, kyllä osui kohdalleen!

It wasn't too long ago when I was searching for ideas for yarn which gradually changes colours. I did start something, but I think there would be better ideas in this book. I think there's plenty of that yarn still left; we'll see if it becomes something like this.

Hihi, and the sheep on the card reminds me of my favourite game at the moment. How to be a sheepdog?

Hot fashion shots - or maybe not

No mulla vois olla vaikka

harmaa villapipo ja

salomoninsolmuilla tehty mekko.

Jorun has found an inspiring fashion photo for this autumn, and I thought I'd follow suit with these. Now, which of these would be the most wearable?

And just a short note for eventual follow-up, if I want to remember what's really been going on lately: Pocahontas and the candy bag are both felted, just need to go a local grocery shop to weigh the total yarn consumption. Also the latest Hyrna shawl is progressing, despite the action I took on Monday. Rip, rip, frog, frog. About 15 rows disappeared because of a minor "impurity" which I didn't like, and have been trying to get back on track ever since. The whole thing ought to be ready on Friday night so that I can block it during the weekend and maybe, just maybe, start a new bigger project. Got the latest Sharon Winsauer pattern, too. Now, just don't get any silly ideas in your head now, there are two more urgent things to do before Pegasus.

Siinä on vaan useampikin kohta, joista en tykkää edes näin alkuvaiheessa, joten mallia täytyisi vähän rukata. Mut jospa nyt ensin laittaisin muutaman muun epäkohdan omassa elämässäni kuntoon.

Lea, Saana, Pocahontas...

Itse kehrätty Lea-lanka on kokenut parikin muodonmuutosta viime päivinä.

Earlier this year, I spun some ..err... colourful yarn (to say the least). It's part of a 'series' of different yarns which I named after some Finnish artists who've been singing and performing since the 60's and whose songs were playing on the radio throughout my childhood years. This yarn reminds me of the redhead on the left, and was thus named 'Lea'.

Lea has been quite an artist and shown her true nature during the few hours I've spent with her: difficult to handle and rather unpredictable, but I think there's something special under the rough surface. The first attempt to work with her wasn't successful, so I had to start all over again, and the second photo shows where we are now. Actually, looking at it now, I think I might modify it for the third time.

However, I think that this is a case of "the artist formerly known as"..., and I think I should rename the finished product. The whole palette of colours reminds me of autumn in New England or in Lapland, therefore it might be renamed Saana or Pocahontas (ok, maybe Pocahontas didn't live in New England but close enough).

Yada-yada. I'd better get back to my knitting. There's another bag idea being tested, this time something that doesn't require handles at all. You'll see... But before I go, here's my colleague's bag which I modified a bit during the weekend, and she didn't kill me even though I'd taken it from her office without her permission. Phew! Shouldn't have done that, though. And then there's the little black number you saw earlier, but now it's been felted and I've knitted the colourful rim (should just find the time and energy to attach it to the bag itself, then weigh the bag part before attaching the handles. So many projects, so little time!)

One step forward, two steps back - Letkajenkkaa

First of all, hello to my Secret Pal and thanks for the card! Colmar is one of the places on my 'to do and to see' list, and I'm kicking myself for not visiting it when I lived in Luxembourg. It would have been so much closer (less than three hours of driving) than starting the trip from Brussels. You also asked me how I landed in Belgium. Well, I was offered a job here and I took it and haven't really thought about going back yet. :-)

Then, as you may have noticed, on the initiative of a Finnish knitter, there's a joint venture going on: in the four months remaining of this year, we're supposed to reduce both our stash and our own weight by 10 %. There are about 100 participants, so it's quite an amount of yarn and extra weight we're trying to get rid of. Since my yarns are being stored in two different countries and in three different places, it's practically impossible to know the total amount of my stash. Therefore, and since I like a challenge, I decided to aim at a nice round figure. I know it's crazy, but I've made a pledge to lose 10 kilograms instead of 10 percent. Well, I've tweakded the rules a bit, but the main point is that one is allowed to buy more yarn as well as donate it - as long as you reach your own personal goal, it's ok.

A bouquet of barbed wire (does anyone remember that tv series?). When I visited London, I tried to stay sensible and not to buy anything...or as little as possible. Managed quite well, but you should see the mental shopping list I made for next year. I could easily have bought 10 kilos of yarn in just one day, but losing the same amount in four months won't be as easy. But here's something I needed for a project which has been on the back of my head for several years. The good thing about it is that it's something I really want to do, so basically it's progressing rather nicely. On the other hand, no matter how large it turns out to be, it'll still be incredibly light and doesn't really have an impact on the total amount. If I spent the same amount of time knitting some other yarn, I'd get much better results. Anyway, it's Habu's Kasumi, 54 m / 14 g and I'll post some additional photos later on.

Tää on siis Habun Kasumia, kaksi 14 gramman kerää, à 14 grammaa. Kukkakimppu piikkilankaa.

However, I have started and finished something. This felted entrelac bag ate all the Atelier Zitron Loft balls I bought in Berlin a couple of weeks ago, so that's a positive sign. Loft felts nicely and didn't need any protective plastic inside of the bag - you know that some yarns just become a tangled mess and you're supposed to attach some plastic inside of the mittens or the bags you're putting into the washing machine. The handles are from Rowan - I've decided to finally put some things into good use and not just store them in a box. One thing is still missing: a matching lining, but that'll have to wait til mid-September. I hope to find the perfect fabric at another fair - but will I be able to resist the temptation of buying more yarn?

Once I get started, there's no stopping. Another to-be-felted bag, made on the bus or on the metro on the way to work. I'll add some colourful yarn once I find it. The handles are from Copenhagen, once again, bought a couple of years ago.

Täällä on melkein käynnistynyt sarjatuotanto.

Now, here's something I might delete later but it fits this felting theme rather well. My colleague at work started knitting after a few years' pause and she made this felted bag last autumn. However, as you see, there was a minor mishap with the handles - you can't really carry the bag on your shoulder. I brought her some cutters and suggested that she could carefully cut the felt and reattach the handles. Months passed, nothing happened, and just the other day she brought the cutters back to me and said that she just hadn't had the time to do the repairs. The bag was sitting in the corner of her office, abandoned. Yesterday, when she had left, I took the bag home with me and will repair it this weekend. Only now have I started to think about her reaction. I probably should have asked, but I want it to be a surprise. Besides, the bag was clearly visible, I didn't took it from a cupboard or anything. And besides number 2: if the bag remains like that, it's useless anyway, so even if I don't have her direct permission...well, I think it's a good deed I'm doing. We'll see. She might never speak to me again.

Laukku on siis nyhjöttänyt käyttämättömänä hänen työhuoneensa nurkassa jo pitkän aikaa.

To end this rambling, here's a photo of the project I should concentrate on. The yarn is Rowan's Biggy Print in "Thunder" and I'd like to make a really long coat of it, and since it's rather expensive yarn, I'd like to start from the top and knit as far as the yarn goes. The problem was that if I use 15mm needles, it's a bit too tight while 20mm needles result in too loose a surface. I'm afraid that since the coat is going to be extremely heavy, it'll further strech the stitches. Also, I do have 18mm straight wooden needles, but if the whole coat is going to be made in one piece, the stitches just wouldn't fit onto it. The rescue came in the form of Raglana and Scottish fibres online shop. They sell 100 cm circular needles made out of smooth beech, and I got the needle earlier this week. Have been swatching ever since. Too bad that these swatches won't be included in the total yarn consumption (or they will, but only after they're part of the finished coat). It's just a scary thought that each of those swatches consists of 100 grams of yarn and they cover an area of some 25 x 26 cm. Now, that's a knitting project you don't take with you on a busy morning bus.

Hohhoh. Taidankin tästä taas siirtyä siivoilemaan, purkamaan mallitilkkuja ja pyykkäämään. Ulkona vähän tihuuttaa, joten kuntopyörä taitaa toimia pyykkitelineenä eikä siitä siis ole isompaa apua siinä toisessa pudotushaasteessa.

Where were you 10 years ago? - Ennen oli ennen, nyt on nyt

Ten years ago, when Princess Diana died, we were out on a trip somewhere in Belgium. I can't remember who was driving or even who were in the car, but at some point we drove through a small village and passed a Nato troups' area where flags were flying at half mast. There should have been some sort of fair that day but nothing much was going on, the mood was really somber. Who has died, we wondered - must be a Nato general at least to create this effect. We didn't stop and didn't hear about the accident before returning home in the evening.

And this is how her former home, the Kensington Palace looked like last Sunday. Went to London for the weekend and wanted to see how the tenth anniversary was affecting the place.

There were plenty of flowers, photos, newspaper cuts, toys and teddybears plus various other memorabilia attached to the railings. And it seemed to be a real place for venting one's feelings: there were photos of Camilla and Charles as well, and Camilla's eyes were gauged out. I really wonder what would have happened if she went to the remembrance service as originally planned.

The rest of the trip was mostly spent on the Tube, travelling from one (closed) yarn shop to another. I had a couple of new yarn shops on my 'to do' list - wanted to check those before the Knitting and Stitching show in October. I'm still kicking myself for not taking photos of Stash Yarns. Just take a look at that yarn list! (and please stop drooling)

The next stop was I knit London, then Loop and finally, on Sunday, All the fun of the fair. Quite a program, quite a challenge not to buy any (or should I be honest and say 'not too much') yarn. Did quite well. Will show you in the near future what I bought. And it's not much.

This trip didn't include any museum tours, neither any art exhibitions. This is the closest thing to a piece of art - it's the window of Selfridge's. A skirt with dozens and dozens of leather applications in different colours, all in the shape of a cross.
Details.

and the hemline
Almost like autumn leaves, isn't it?
And here's proof that even though I may have wanted to buy some yarn, it was made impossible. The note on the window says that they had a stand on the near-by fair on Regent Street, but I never found them. Oh well, there's always next time.
Didn't find the 'Yarn forward' magazine anywhere else, and this one was behind closed doors.
The shop is situated just off Carnaby street and there are lots of other small shops.
And Regent Street was packed full. Didn't get any closer this facade but it looked like the Finnish artist Anu Tuominen had been set free once again.
