A special update - Keskeytämme normaaliohjelman tärkeän tiedotuksen vuoksi

My dear readers, we've reached quite a milestone. There have been 50,000 visitors since last October and I just find it amazing. Thank you all, and just keep dropping by - there's still some yarn left in my stash and if it shows any signs of diminishing, I know just the remedy.

But what has kept you visiting this blog? I honestly don't know whether this is a compliment or not, but at least I've covered a varied field of interest. Or, to specify, the guests seem to have some questions on their mind and they've been looking for answers here. Here´s a top 10 of the queries they used in Google, Yahoo or some other search robot and landed here.

Tavaratalo Carrefour Brussels (department store Carrefour Brussels - there is no such thing)
kissa+joulutervehdys (cat+season's greetings)
citylenkkarit netistä (smart sport shoes, buying on the net)
hedelmäsalaatin ohje (recipe for fruit salad)
Miksi pidät huivia? (why do you wear a scarf?)
kalojen + latinankielinen (fish + in Latin)
who was pharaoh gedifra’s father?
Jos Tonne pigeons (Eh? Who is Jos Tonne?)
knitting yarn made in Italy made with fur brushed to right side
hevosia myytävänä (horses for sale)

But I think the most disappointed guest was the one who googled "pin up girl photos" and landed in the middle of my knitting blog. Keep coming, folks!

kissa+joulutervehdys
citylenkkarit netistä
hedelmäsalaatin ohje
Miksi pidät huivia?
kalojen + latinankielinen
who was pharaoh gedifra’s father?
Jos Tonne pigeons
(Täh? Kuka on Jos Tonne? Joku kyyhkysenkasvattaja?)
knitting yarn made in Italy made with fur brushed to right side
hevosia myytävänä

Yhdelle vieraalle olen ainakin tuottanut karvaan pettymyksen.

Resume normal functions: THE cross stitch project is finished - Paluu normaalielämään: SE ristipistotyö vihdoin valmis

Finally! Got up early this morning before the heat in the flat became unbearable in order to framed this time-sucker so that I could go on with my life. I guess I'm supposed to feel proud and content that it's finished, but I all I feel is exhaustion and almost regret of wasting so much time on it. Yeah, I bought it for the sake of the appearance, not cross-stitching itself (which I don't regard as a rewarding hobby at all - I just do it.) If this picture was available as a post card, I would have been equally happy with that. And what *really* scares me is Kati's comments that there might be another kit in this series, featuring shoes. Have mercy!

Armoa! Ei jaksa enää!
Some tricks were needed. I highly recommend this pencil for marking the details - the ink disappears in a few days.

Temppukynä, joka olikin tarpeen. Sen jälki häviää muutamassa päivässä, joten sillä on näppärä merkitä tarvittavat yksityiskohdat kuten tässä tuo tekstiosuus.

"Precision scissors", it read on the package. I'll say. - Normally I don't mind if I get a couple of stitches wrong but now I wanted redo an entire area. Needed a pair of tiny scissors, so went to this shop. Again, higly recommended, excellent service and the entirely shop full of temptating patterns. I'll be back, but first I have to sort out the current projects, cross stitch and other ones.

"Precision scissors" luki paketissa - joo, lievästi sanottuna...
Sunflower series continues, item 2/101. Originally I wasn't too happy with myself and/or the framing. After all, when it hangs 5 years on the wall, you don't even notice any more.

Hello Copenhagen, Brussels calling

Hi, everybody in Copenhagen and near-by!

I'm starting my summer holiday with a short visit to Copenhagen - would anybody like to have a knitting meeting over a cup of coffee on Friday 1 July? I 'll be flying in rather early in the morning and will continue home in the afternoon; will be in the city between 10 am and about 3.30. If yes, please leave a message.

****

Just a reminder - Muistutan vaan että

Any day now someone will be the 50,000th visitor in this blog, and I have a small surprise waiting for that person. If you see that the counter at the bottom of this page has hit 50,000 when you come here, please leave a comment or contact me via e-mail.

Tarkkailkaapas sivun lopussa näkyvää kävijälaskuria. Luvassa on pieni yllätys sille, jonka kohdalla näkyviin pyörähtää tasalukema 50000.

"Espanjatar olen sorja"... Joo, hyvä, valehtele lisää. - Searching for the truth, constantly

Once again, I've spent a hot weekend and even managed to squeeze in some knitting, even though the phrase "sticky fingers" came to its true meaning. Cross stitching was out of the question, but I finished a another ladder yarn project. The finished product could be used as a cool, see-through shawl or a fishing net. That latter feature might be handy during my summer holiday, we'll see how much fish I manage to trawl with it.

I'm a fan of ladder yarn... ha-ha.

Oh man, she's been travelling again...wonder where.

enough is enough

As if it wasn't warm enough, this parrot wanted to stay indoors.
Obviously didn’t fool anyone with those photos - they were taken here in Belgium. There was a garden/hobby fair held at the premises of the National Botanic Garden of Belgium in Meise, just outside of Brussels. It’s a lovely place and worth visiting every time of the year. The area covers 92 hectares and offers facilities for plant research and conservation of the species, large greenhouses with different biotopes around the world, a library/shop where you can buy plant books in several languages. The visitors are guided through different areas of woodland, ponds, herbs, roses, bamboo forests and meadows. If you’re lucky, you may see some deer roaming in the valleys, ponds are filled with carps as large as piglets, and then there are flocks of geese that keep the grass well trimmed and even better fertilised.

And even though you weren’t the least bit interested to hear the following story, I’m going to tell it anyway. This area used to belong to the Royal family and as could be expected, where would they live but in castles. Actually, there used to be two of them, the Castle of Meise destroyed in WWII, Castle of Bouchout still standing, some parts of it dating back to the 14th century, some parts restored. One of the most (in)famous kings of Belgium ever was Leopold II – you may have seen a BBC document a while ago. We may return to Leopold later, but let’s first take a short look at his sister’s life. Princess Charlotte was born in 1840, the only daughter of Belgium’s first king Leopold I. She has been described both beautiful and intelligent (she learned to read before she was three years old), so it was no wonder that there were suitors forming a queue when she grew up. Already at the age of 17 Charlotta married the Austrian archiduc Maximilian – who at some point wrote the following about his bride: “She is very clever, which is a bit worrying, but no doubt I will get over that." I wonder whether he ever did.

This wasn’t one of those stories where the prince and princess live happily ever after. The young couple, still formally future Austrian regents, settled in Italy and started building a castle there: the fabulous Miramare
. However, Maximilian’s brother dismissed him, claiming the Austrian throne himself. Maximilian had powerful allies, though. The Mexican monarchists (yes, Mexican!), supported by the French Napoleon III, offered him the throne of Mexico. M. and Charlotta accepted and were crowned the Emperor and Empress of Mexico, and off they sailed. Even in Mexico they led a turbulent life, and only a few years later Maximilian’s regime was endangered. Charlotta returned to Europe to seek support for her husband but all in vain. Maximilian was executed, Charlotta never returned to Mexico but spent the rest of her life mainly in Italy and Belgium, suffering from mental illness and seemingly being hushed away to a recluse existence. The castles in Meise seemed perfect for this purpose. She died in 1927, according to some sources still believing she was the Empress of Mexico.

Charlotte naitettiin jo 17-vuotiaana Itävallan arkkiherttua Maximilianille, joka jossain vaiheessa kuvasi morsiotaan seuraavasti: ”She is very clever, which is a bit worrying, but no doubt I will get over that."

Remember the Christmas carol "12 days of Chrismas"? - Muistattekos tämän joululaulun?

On the first day of Christmas,
my true love sent to me
A partridge in a pear tree.

On the second day of Christmas,
my true love sent to me
Two turtle doves,
And a partridge in a pear tree.

New items are added every day, and that's exactly how I felt this week with the mail pouring in. There was something for every day, even though one item arrived at my Finnish address in the anticipation of my summer holiday.

On Monday I got a replacement shipment for the gold beads for the cross stitch project. Not that the stitching is even near the end... it takes ages to put all the tiny details there. Anyway, it MUST be ready in two weeks.

On Tuesday the mailman brought the Mitten Book by Inger and Ingrid Gottfridsson, ISBN 0937274364. Patterns of 40 traditional Swedish mittens (mainly from Gotland). Nice but not spectacular. A good book to keep in your knitting book library, should you suddenly need some inspiration. Just grab the materials and this book and go.

On Wednesday I got a message from Finland that the Simplify your life cross stitch project had arrived; you remember, the one that was presented a while ago. I just wonder whether I'll have time for that during those precious Finnish summer nights.

Thursday's gift was presented on the very day, and yesterday, on Friday, I had this Dutch book in my mailbox. Henriette van der Klift-Tellegen's Nederlands visserstruien (also available in English, Traditional Dutch Fishermen's Sweaters), ISBN 9021308991. History, presentation of the area where they come from and patterns for knitting traditional dark blue sweaters which seem to share a large part of history with other areas where life was risky and sweater patterns may have been needed to identify drowned seamen. I'll return to this book once I've had a better glance at it but it takes a bit of an effort being written in Dutch. Anyway, it's good practice and good fun - now I just have to get my lazy behind out of this chair and hit the city. See you later! I'll pop in every now and then to check the visitor counter; remember, 50000 is the number to watch :-)

Maanantaina tuli ne ristipistotyön viimeistelyyn tarvittavat pikkuruiset kultahelmet. Ei sillä että rp-työ olis lähelläkään loppuaan... herramunjee miten paljon aikaa kaikkien piperryksien lisäämiseen kuluukaan! No, joka tapauksessa työn pitää olla valmis vajaan kahden viikon päästä. Ruoska heilumaan.

Keskiviikon antia oli jo aiemmin täällä esitelty vähän pienempi ristipistotyö Simplify your life.

No juu. Kiitokset Tiinalle!
I think I'll start a new series within this blog. It will be called "101 sunflower items" and presents a weekly item which is somehow related to sunflowers or decorated with them. Here's the very first article which is a bit difficult to describe. You can record a short audio message and send it as a greeting card, for instance. Or you can record driving instructions for yourself and listen to them just pressing a button. One of those things that are absolutely useless but fascinating. Just can´t get my head round the fact that someone is actually buying stuff like this (innocent whistling).

Sarjan ensimmäistä tavaraa on vähän vaikea kuvata tarkasti.
A while ago there was a question going round the blogs - what do you see when you look out of your window. Being slow and sluggish, I'm replying only now (or this morning there was something worth showing you).

There's a wild parakeet community (or several) in the nearby park, so if you hear a screech, just look up and you should be able to catch a glimpse of those birds. They are bright green, but I didn't have time to adjust my camera, just took a hasty photo.

Up on the left.

Hiljattain blogeja kiersi kysymys "mitä näet ikkunastasi", ja hämäläisgeenejä omaavana mä vastaan siihen vasta nyt. Tai siis tänä aamuna oli jotain näytettävääkin.

Brysselin puistoissa elää villiintyneitä papukaijayhdyskuntia, ja aika usein ilmaa leikkaa terävä kirkaisu. Silloin yleensä myös näkee vihreän vilauksen - nää on oikeesti kirkkaanvihreitä, mutta mä en ehtinyt pahemmin kameran asetuksia säädellä, räppäsin vaan kuvan. Kuusen latvassa vasemmalla on jotain outoa, eikö?

Not much of a detail but at least you can see the silhouette of the bird.

Hämärä kuva, mutta ainakin papukaijan ääriviivat näkyy.

And while we are on the subject of green colour and casting a look outside, here's the current state of the towel I wanted to place in the front of the door leading to my terrace. The idea was that there should always be something green to be seen any time of the year. Besides, what a pleasure to walk on flowers.

It's been one of those weeks when all your plans and hopes for some extra time for yourself have been shot down. I missed the monthly knitting meeting here in Brussels yesterday - just couldn't get out of the office on time. On Monday I had to rush to have some photos developed, then do some grocery shopping and sit ages on a bus on the way home - the worst part being that I could not continue knitting then. On Tuesday I stayed late in the office, yesterday I was trying to get out of there on time but failed, and today I just managed to visit our local post office before it closed at 7pm.

There was a parcel waiting for me there (in fact, it's been an excellent week mail-wise, I'll tell you more about it during the weekend) - the Secret Nordic Friend II project has come to an end. So, I rushed home, switched on the tv and decided to make some coffee before opening the package. Suddenly I heard the word "knitting" on the telly, grabbed the camera and got some photos of the tv screen. There was a presenter of an antiques show who got a scarf from the ladies whose jun... items he was flogging, and boy oh boy does the boy look surprised.

Really?

And what was in the parcel? A scarf for me as well - something self-made was the key word of this last round. This gift came all the way from the States, say hello to "Strikketanten" - a Dane who lives in California. Thank you very much! I don't know whether you've done some spying in my blog but earlier I've presented bag and it's almost the same colour. I can see myself walk to our weekly market in the autumn, wearing the scarf, buying some soft pink Ericas and carrying them home in this bag.

and this is for ME

Mielikuvaharjoittelua, sanoisin.

Tiina suggested I should wear matching gloves and beret as well. We're halfway there, these gloves should do the trick (pink/mauve being one of those colours that play tricks on the photos. Trust me on this one: they do match.)

If this doesn't make the visitor counter go crazy, what will?

Ok folks, I know this is a cheap shot but I can't let it go. First of all, any day now someone will be the 50,000th visitor in this blog, and I have a small surprise waiting for that person. If you see that the counter at the bottom of this page has hit 50,000 when you come here, please leave a comment or contact me via e-mail.

And I leave you in awe of these photos - if you are a cat person, that is. There was an ad in our intranet saying that five kittens were searching for new homes. I've been pestering my mother with the idea that she should have a cat, and these babies would be just the right age when my summer holiday starts, so in principle I could fetch one of these beauties and take him/her to Finland with me. Besides, the grey ones are just like the first tomcat I ever had, Misu. That's a female cat's name, but he just kept growing and growing until he looked like a lion - he was half a Persian cat, and his fur was magnificent, adding to his size. These furballs will probably be just like him. How can anyone resist them?

Olen vongannut äiskältä lupaa tuoda sille Suomeen tullessani kissanpentu, ja nämä pikku pöppelit olis just oikean ikäisiä loman alkaessa.

Oh, and thanks for the new comments - I'll return to them later, but now there are some breaking news from the CNN.
Pllleeaaase adopt me! Eiks kukaan haluu mua?
Can I have them all?

A perfect weekend... almost – Melkein täydellinen viikonloppu

I should warn you – this is going to be a long message with plenty of photos. Go and get yourself a cup of your favourite drink before you sit down, this may take a while.

My preparations for the summer weekends usually start on Thursday. I can’t go home directly from work on Friday and I have to have my gear ready by Thursday night. Ready for what? Well, for my summertime hobby number one: rollerskating! Yeeeaaah!!! There’s a Friday night skating tour around Brussels every Friday night. It’s done in co-operation with the mayor of Brussels and the local police force, involving dozens of volunteers, and some of the major streets and tunnels are closed. So, if you live in Brussels and need to go to the airport on a Friday night, please take a train to get there.

I wonder whether they used me as a model... Posted by Hello
Last Friday we had the launch of the summer skating season, and as always when you’re doing something after a long break, you’re bound to feel a bit wobbly. Even though I’ve skated for some 25 years, I still have the same feeling when getting back on wheels in the spring: excitement, adrenaline rush and in the back of it all, a slight fear. I’ve taken quite a bad fall when I was 17 (hit my head, suffered from amnesia for a while and so on), and even though I wear all the possible protection, I don’t take things for granted. Besides, even though you may have a better-than-average abilities, there are so many people, so many skill levels and so many daredevils that literally anything can happen. But believe me,it’s so much fun as well. The organisers claim that the round we make is some 20 kilometres. I’d like to believe that but at least the first round wasn’t that long… but it did squeeze all the strength from my thighs. They felt like blocks of concrete the next morning. There is a bus gathering all the people who become too tired to skate or get blisters or some other minor injuries during the trip. Of course, there’s also first aid and technical assistance available, should you lose a wheel or something similar.

The gathering for the parade has barely started. In the background the Atomium, a symbol of Brussels, and the the spire which will feature later in today's posting. Posted by Hello

You can also rent a pair of skates. Posted by Hello

And we're rolling... Posted by Hello

The gathering starts around 7pm and we set off at 8. There are several breaks on the way during which we may get some free bottles of water or ice tea from the sponsors, or just wait for the policemen to close the roads ahead. Of course, the organisers also make sure that even the slowest skaters have passed a check-point before opening the roads for traffic again. The tour ends around midnight in the city center and then there’s a party going on… not that I’d have enough energy to join it. Besides, the last metro runs around midnight, so getting home in one piece is top priority when we’ve finished skating.

This is the scary part. In a minute we'll be entering the tunnel. Posted by Hello

Luckily most of us came out unharmed. Posted by Hello

Actually, there would have been more skaters, but I suppose dozens/hundreds of them were at the King Baudoin stadium (formerly known as Heyzel) where U2 started its European tour. Huge success, as expected.

I was so sweaty and smelly and tired and there was such a bad case of helmet hair as well that I simply wanted to get home as soon as possible. Was home after midnight, took a quick shower and slept like a log.

This parade was also supposed to be seen in Brussels, but the city authorities said no. Would have caused too much attention, they said. Actually, the skaters joked that we should arrange a skate-in-the-nude happening.., God forbid.
I’d set alarm clock to wake me up on Saturday – should have gone to the hairdresser’s early in the morning and then continued with other activities throughout the whole day. Instead, when I read my e-mails, there was a message that turned the whole schedule upside down. There was a message from Interweave Press saying that their website was hit by a hacker during a certain period of time, and my customer details may have been stolen – including the details of my credit card. I’ve placed an order with them in 2003, and even that was handled so badly that I wowed I’d never go back (they charged twice for my magazine subscription of one year, despite several complaints I was never refunded). I just cannot understand how and why such old customer details are still available on the site.

Normally I take things with a pinch of salt, and of course I’ve seen the hoax e-mails where fraudsters ask you to confirm your credit card numbers “for checking”. But this message seemed rather genuine, and there wasn’t a credit card number even mentioned. I contacted the Interweave asking for their confirmation, searched for the numbers of credit card helplines and posted a warning to the Finnish knitting list. No-one has encountered the same problem ,at least not yet. Closed my Visa account (hope to get a new card before my summer holiday) and Amex was happy with just my phone call and to be informed about the risk. I’ll get a new card from them anyway in next month, so let’s hope that it’s smooth sailing until July. (This incident was the only negative one during this weekend, otherwise it would have been just perfect.)
By this time I was well behind my schedule, so I arrived at late at the Brussels KIP Meeting, held in Grand’Place. A group of knitters had gathered on a sunny terrace of one the most famous cafes there, attracting the interest of passers-by and fellow customers. A seat was kindly arranged for me, and I sat down to see what the others were up to and show my own project which I had started on the metro while getting to the city. Once again, there were several different knitting styles, ways of holding the needles, and also a great variety of projects. Squares for a bed-spread, colourful intarsia, lace made with thin yarn, thick yarn, straight needles, circular needles. It was so nice to meet you all, although I didn’t catch all the names. But I’ll try to meet you at Passiflore next week, even though my colleague is absent every Wednesday and when she’s not there, I can’t leave the office as early as I would like to.

A gorgeous KIP day in Brussels

Hopefully you can see the details.
