Mountainash...ish

Yarn: 100 % wool, about 230 grams. There’s no information about the yardage or much else for that matter but I counted wraps per inch and got 22. That’ll put it in the lace weight category.
Needles: 3.75 mm metallic Addis (didn’t change between the 3 and 4 mm needles)
Pattern: “When the Mountainash is in flower” from “New Style of Heirloom Knitting”, ISBN 4529039927.
Final dimensions: width circa 250 cm, length 135 cm. Larger than the original, but that’s partly due to the modifications I made on the way. Modelled here by someone who is significantly taller than me.
Time needed: three weeks.

Main differences:

Every other pattern’s background is in garter stitch, every other’s in stockinette. Except for the last two, both in stockinette.

Row 70-80:
I’m not a perfectionist, but I found it really annoying that the small round cat’s eye or bird’s eye patterns didn’t go over the “mountain top” – I mean the zigzag pattern which peaks on row 69. I added two repeats of the round thingies, which meant that the following zigzag couldn’t start on row 70 but 10 rows later. This also caused some other alterations, since the I also mirrored the zigzag pattern from rows 103-107 (the other one wouldn’t have matched with the cat’s eyes).

I don't have Fleegle's talent, nor her patience to turn these into neat instructions but you get the idea. Repeat the cat's eyes as below and repeat rows 103-107 when there's enough space for them.

Row 155-180
The diamond motifs were a bit too close to each other and in particular, they started and ended too soon before/after the previous/next patterns. I moved mine further apart, adding both rows and stitches between them.

Row 201-249
Again, the small motifs were placed in a strange way. I went for more symmetry and made only six of them in each triangle.

Middle stitch:
There’s been a lot of discussion whether there is a middle stitch or not. I wanted to have some sort of ‘spine’ running in the middle of the back but not two rows of yarnovers. The original stitch count doesn’t have a provision for a middle stitch, so one might just leave it out and hope that blocking takes care of the problem. As you can see, there’s quite a fishbone in the middle now, and it was made as follows: Wrong side: k2tog, yo, ssk. Right side: p1, yo, p2.

Suokaa anteeksi, suomalaiset.

Todella kaunis on huivi. Minäkin harrastan usein tuota "mutkien suoristamista" neuleohjeiden suhteen. Usein lopputulos jopa paranee, kuten nytkin.

Ihan järjettömän hieno! Pitäisiköhän tässä heittäytyä bussin eteen jos sitten saisi jotain yhtä hienoa aikaan ;-) Tuommoinen suuren suuri huivi on haaveisa. Huaskaa vuodenvaihdetta tässä samalla!

Beautiful Job! That shawl is alot larger than I thought it would end up. It's nice to have someone wearing it for scale. I think the alterations you made look really terrific.
