Lady, you have some explaining to do

Phew! Don't know the official temperature outside today, but it's been an absolutely stifling weekend. We've had a heatwave far beyond any expectations - it must have been around 30 centigrades today. If I could choose, it would be about 30 grades less - it's just impossible to do anything in this weather. During Saturday it got so awful that I had a five-hour-nap in the middle of the day and only started to function when the flat cooled down late in the evening. Today was a different story. Don't quite know how it happened but a friend managed to talk me out of the flat, and we went to see a flower show at the Castle of Groot Bijgaarden, followed by an art exhibition.

Here's the entrance to the castle (unfortunately I'm just about to go to bed, so no lengthy history lessons this time. Let's just say that the castle dates back to the 17th century).

The lake beside the castle was full of big fat fish. The bird in this picture wasn't exactly small, yet it was dwarfed by the monsters swimming in the water. If I was this bird, I'd be seriously worried, at least for my offspring. See the fin cutting through the water?

The castle park is becoming famous for its unusual tulips, and although the day was far too sunny and bright to show the depth of the colours, there were some spectacular species. It's funny when the label says 'tulips' but the flowers resemble lilies or roses.

And as if that wasn't enough of colour therapy, the exhibition started with this large orange piece of ...err... art. Seriously, it is listed as one of the items on display, and although the rest of them were smaller, they lacked nothing in brightness and colour.

Finally, here's the part where I should have prepared a good explanation as to why and how I have some new yarn to show although it's Sunday and the shops are closed, not to mention the fact that I've been trying to curb the urge to buy any more yarn. Well, I got this from a friend, and believe or not, I have an unfinished piece of knitting project back home which could use this Italian extravaganza. I have started (years ago) a cardigan which consists of Mexican bits and pieces: there are intarsia figures of donkeys, men in sombreros and various cactii. Now, next time I visit Finland, I'll just have to find that piece somewhere. (hihi, and please notice that my friend had helpfully turned some hanks into neat balls, but she had also had some plans for the yarn which didn't include pink and yellow fluffy bits so she'd carefully plucked those ones out while I can't wait to show them in their full glory. Will I ever grow up?)
