Spot the odd one out, part I - Mikä ei kuulu joukkoon, osa I

The (hyper) active Finnish knitting list had a hot tip a few months ago: A German museum was going host exhibition of Rosemarie Trockel, a contemporary artist who mixes and matches materials, knitted textures being one of her trademarks. I couldn't let this opportunity pass, so early on Saturday morning we headed for Cologne.

This is how the exhibition leaflet describes the artist: "Since the 1980s Rosemarie Trockel (*1952) has developed a unique and unmistakable oeuvre that has not only made her one of the most important international artists of her generation, but also a model and point of orientation for up-and-coming artists.

Museum Ludwig presents an extensive overview of her work from 1980 to the present day with the media and materials video, drawing, wool, everyday objects, sculptures, and the way they are interwoven with her major concerns, such as a critical appraisal of female life contexts. The exhibition has been prepared in close collaboration with the artist."

I must confess that while some of the artifacts were clever and really picked one's brain, some of them made me think that I'm hiding a serious, serious art collection in my closets. One idea I really liked was "reversed ink blotches" - you know the test where you look at an ink stain and tell what it seems to be? Well, the artist did it the other way round: she read the descriptions someone had written, then made a painting according to it and finally knitted a large panel out of it. Here is a small cavalcade of the things we saw at the exhibition (some of the halls were closely guarded, that's why there aren't so many photos. Oh, and then there was a bonus: in addition to the permanent exhibitions there was a photo exhibition of the world's most famous and photogenic people over the years. Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Marilyn Monroe - Elvis, James Dean and JFK to name a few.

Neulontalistalla oli monta kuukautta sitten maininta Kölniin tulossa olevasta näyttelystä, jossa esiteltiin Rosemarie Trockelin taidetta. Hänen töissään yhdistyy moninaiset materiaalit ja tekniikat, mutta pääosassa on usein suuret neulepinnat. Pakkohan sinne ole mennä kun Kölnissä muutenkin ramppaan, semminkin kun näyttely on auki vain tämän kuun 12. päivään.

Täytyy taas tunnustaa, että vaikka osa näyttelyesineistä oli metkoja ja ajatuksia herättäviä, toiset taas saivat vaan miettimään, millaisia taideaarteita kätkeytyykään tuonne mun kaappeihin. Näytteillä oli mm. videoinstallaatio lankakerästä, joka pyöri lattialla kun joku keri sitä. Hmm. "Minä olen Taide." - Yksi mun suosikki oli neulotut mustetahrat, jotka oli tehty kääntämällä eräs idea ihan päälaelleen. Useinhan palikkatesteissä joutuu kertomaan kuvasta kaikenlaisia tarinoita, siis tyyliin mitä näet tässä musteläikässä. Tämäpä taiteilija olikin lukenut toisten kirjoittamia musteläikkäkuvauksia ja oli sitten piirtänyt niiden perusteella läikän uudelleen, minkä jälkeen vielä neulonut sen suureksi seinäpaneeliksi (ei saanut kuvia, kun salissa oli vartijat. Niin ja sitten saatiin vielä superyllätysbonus: varsinainen museorakennus on valtavan suuri, ja salien läpi laukatessa osuttiin ihan vahingossa valokuvanäyttelyyn, jossa seiniltä tuijotti takaisin mm. Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, James Dean ja JFK.
